Everybody Wants To
Get Into The Act *
FRUSTRATED FANS BRAVE RIDICULE AND ARREST TO SHOW OFF IN PUBLIC
L ONG before - and long after - Showtime's
ski-nosed screwball Jimmy Durante com-
plained, "Everybody wants to get into the act,"
thousands of would-be stars and spontaneous
showoffs have wanted just that. And some get
what they want--darting out on the gridiron to
make a touchdown-stopping tackle, jumping into
the ring to sock a referee.
What is behind such shenanigans? Occasion-
fX1 I~/
ally, but rarely, it is the talented amateur, over-
looked in his regular rounds, who crashes a pro
performance in a dramatic bid to be discovered.
More often, it is just a neighborhood Good Joe,
overcome by excitement or alcohol.
The usual results: For spectators, a belly-
laugh; for officials, a headache; for the inter-
lopers, occasionally applause, usually ejection.
