  SIR: I have the honor herewith respectfully to submit a commu-
nication from the Commissioner of the General Land Office, under-
date of the 3d instant, and the accompanying detailed report of
Dr. D. D. Owen, ,with diagrams and illustrations, pf the geologi-
cal survey and explorations made by him, under instructions from
this department, dnring the past season, in the Chippewa district
of Wisconsin, and the northern-part of Iowa.

  SIR: I have the honor to submit for your consideration, the de-
tailed report of Dr. D. D. Owen, with diagrams and illustrations,
of the geological survey and explorations made by-him under your
instructions during the past season, in the Chippewa district of
Wisconsin, and the northern part of Iowa.
  This report is very satisfactory, being full and explicit, and de-
signating clearly the character of the different districts within the
