Adam, Robert, 1728-1792 / The works in architecture of Robert and James Adam, Esquires
(1902)

AD VER TI SE MEN T.
The Publishers desirous of fulfilling the intention of the late Robert and James Adam, Esqrs. offer to the public the
following work, now rendered complete by the addition of a third volume; containing many plates necessary to conclude
the series of plans, elevations, and sections, begun and continued in the two first volumes. For instance, the series
of designs for Sion-house, one of the mansions of the Duke of Northumberland, which was commenced in the first volume,
is now made perfect by the plates contained in the third. The same remark will apply to Luthon house, the seat of the
late Earl of Bute, and several other edifices.
The high estimation in which Mr. Robert Adam and his brother were held by Lord Mansfield, and many other
noblemen and gentlemen distinguished by their taste in the fine arts, furnishes a convincing proof of their merit.
But the Adams, were not celebrated merely for the classic elegance of their designs, but also in the practical
department of their profession, their modes of construction having been applauded by the most eminent architects of
their day, and the prefaces to the numbers in which the two first volumes of this work were originally published, are replete
with acute observation and classical research.
The work contains one hundred and five plates, twenty-five of which belong to the third volume. Many of the
plates are engraved by Zucchi, Pastorini, Cunego, Vivares, and by Piranesi, the friend and admirer of the authors.
In order to give as extended a circulation as possible to a work so necessary to complete the library of all those
whose professions are connected with the art of design, the publishers have fixed the price of the work at seven guineas
and a half, which, when compared with the selling price of works of much less magnitude and importance, must be
considered exceedingly moderate.
AVIS.
