the back: the fides under the wings, the
thighs, belly, and covert-feathers beneath
the tail are white, as are the outer feathers
of the tail on each fide, with their upper
covert-feathers: from the (houlders fpring
plats of long narrow white feathers, which
extend themselves between the back and
wings on each fide almoft to the beginning
of the tail: the legs and toes are of a dufky
red: the webs of the feet are black: it
hath a little fin or lateral web on the infide
of each of the inner toes, and on the un-
der fides of its finall backward toes.
This Duck was taken on the fifhing-banks
of Newfoundland in America, and is now,
A. D. 1754, preserved dry in the colledion
of Mr. Furzer of New-Inn, London, who
obliged me with the ufe of it. This figure
was etched on the copper-plate immedi-
ately from nature. I am-1 doubtful whether
this Bird is not of the fame fpecies with
the Long-tailed Duck from Hudfon's Bay,
figured in my Hiftory of Birds, pl. i56.
On comparifon, I think itpoflible that they
may be male and female, their meafures,
and the figures of their bills and feet,
agreeing very nearly: but I fubmit this
opinion to the further inquiry of naturalifts.
I believe mine to be the firft figure and de-
fcription given of this Duck.
The Spur-winged Plover is reduced from
its natural fize, in much the fame propor-
tion with the Duck: it is of the bignefs of
our Lapwin~g; but hath the legs lon1ger in
proportion: the length of thre wing, when
cle(Jd, is feven inches: the leg, fiom the
krice to the bottom of th.2 heel, is three
inclhes in length.
The bill is black : the top of the h ead is
covered with black gloffy feathers, which
are pretty long, and I believe can be raifed
