XPLANATION
OF THE
PLATES.
P LAN C H E S.
PLATE I.
Plan of the Parlour Story, and principal Floor.
This house, like that described in the preceding Number, is considerably
circumscribed with regard to scite; notwithstanding which, great care
has been taken to make the apartments spacious, and even magnificent.
The eating-room, the music-room, and Sir Watkins's library, below; the two
withdrawing-rooms, and Lady Wynn's dressing-room, above; together with
the great stair-case, have been thought to merit these appellations : and the
others, though of less ample dimensions, are, notwithstanding, sufficiently
large, and have been accounted elegant.
PLATE II.
Elevation of the principal Front.
It is not in a space of forty-six feet, which is the whole extent of the ele-
vation, that an architect can make a great display of talents. Where variety
and grandeur in composition cannot be obtained, we must be satisfied with
a justness of proportion and an elegance of style.
PLATE I1l.
Plan and Elevation of a Screen-wall between the Court ot the House
belonging to the Duke of Leeds and that of Sir Walkin Williams
Wrnn .
This wall fronts the windows of several of the apartments. It was
therefore necessary to make it an object of some beauty and elegance.
It is chiefly executed in the stucco known by the name of its inventor,
Liardet; which has been lately introduced intovery general use, and
will not only add new beauty to the exterior appearance of this great
Metropolis, but will also contribute to the duration of its buildings.
P L A T E I V.
Front of the Offices towards the Court,
Which is built of Portland-stone, and handsomely decorated; because
that too is in the view of the apartments.
PLATE V.
Parts at large in the Hall and Eating-room.
PLATE VI.
Cieling of the Eating-room.
PLATE VII.
Cieling of the Music-room.
P L A T E V I II.
Plan, Elevation, and Profile, of an Organ in the Music-room.
PLANCHE I.
6t6 r~putdes l6gantes.
P L A N C H E I1.
P L A N C H E I 11.
P L A N C H E I V.
P L A N C H E V.
