rl7e Red-cheekcd Wood-pecker.
T H I S Bird is here figured of its natural
T   bignefs: it is a Wood-pecker pro-
perly fo called, having the tail-feathers
fluiff and worn at their ends.
The bill is of a brownifh colour, not
.hizel-pointed, as in fome of this fpecies,
but fharp. From the angles of the mouth
affes beneath the eves on each fide the
head a plat of fine red feathers, which
cover the cheeks or fides of the head;
from which marks I have denominated
the fpecies.  Except the red fpot men-
tioned, the whole Bird is of a Lion-colour,
or orange inclining to olive-colour, with
tranfver1e broken bars of a black or dulky
colour, crofiing all the feathers, broader
in fome parts, narrower in others, as the
figure befIt expreffIe. The tips of the quills
are wholly dui1ky: thie covert-feathers
within-file of the wings are buff-coloured,
without marks: the iMfides of the cuills,
and under Iidt of the tail, are coloured
and barred as above, but not fo brighlt.
The tail hath ten feathers. The legs,
feet, aild clawvs, are made as in other

Le bec e/I brunaire, et fa pointe ne re-

de belles plumes rouges, quz couvrent les
joues ou les cote's de la tete; et c'eJf de cette
particularite' que j'ai donne' le nom de Rouge-

ceptee, /'O>iau eJl de coulcur Lionne, ou
de couleur d'orange tirante fur P'olive, avec
des barres noiratres irregulieres qui tra-
verJent - toutes les plumes, et uiii font en
a ßerens endroits plus ou mnoins larges, comzme
cela Je voit dans la figure rnicux que l'on ne
le pourroit decrire. Les bouts des pennes
fint tout-d-/ zit norantres: l's couvertcrcs
intericures des ail/s font couleur de peau de
