C H A P. XCIII.
YVe Crofs-Bills, Cock and Hen.
T HES E birds are figured of their
natural bignefs: the drawings are
original, and were taken on the copper-
plate immediately from the life. The
upper mandible of the bill at the point
croffes over the lower, in fome birds on
the right fide, and in others on the left.
The upper figure reprefents the Cock
bird : its bill, which is pretty thick and
fIrong, is of a dufky or blackifh colour:
the eve is of a dark hazel colour: the
head, neck, breaft, back, and rump are
of a full red: the upper fides of the tail
and wings are of a dark dufky or blackifh
colour, the edges of the quills and tail-
feathers a little inclining to red; the in-
fides of the wings, and under fide of the
tail, are afh-coloured: the thighs, lower
belly, and covert-feathers beneath the tail
are whitifh, with fome duiky fpots: the
legs and feet are of a tawny flefh-colour.
The Hen is represented by the lower
figure: the bill, eyes, legs and feet, agree
ex~uLqly in fhape and colour with thole of
the Cock: the head, neck, and body,
both above and beneath, are of a yel-
low-green colour, like that of the Green-
finch (Chloris); the rump being of a
bright yellow, inclining to orange: the
fides of the head, and the throat, are afh-
coloured; the lower belly, and coverts
uinder the tail, arc of a whitifh afli-colour

Becs Croifes, Mdle et Febmelle.
C E S oferaux font reprefente's de leur
groecur naturelle: les defeins font ori-
ginaux, et ont et~t grave's immediatement
d'apres nature. La niackoire Juperieure dzc
bec croife a' la pointe par defus I'infe'rieure,
a que/ques oiftaux c'eOfur le cote' droit, et a'
d'autres fur le cote' gauche.
La figure d'enhaut reprcffente le MAdle:
fon bec, qui eJi aJi'z gros et fort, eJI obJcur
ou noirdtre: /'Pil eyj d'un noifette fonce':
la tete, le cou, l'eflotach, le dos et le crou-
pion font d'un rouge parfait: le dcjiis de
la queu.t et des ailes eJ d 'un ob/cur f  once' ou
noirdtre; les bords des pennes et des pl/nes
de la queue tirent un peu Jur le rouge; le
deßfus des ailes et de la queue eJI couleur de
cendre: les cui/es font blanchatres, aujibien
que le bas ventre et les plumes de couverture
du defi/us de la queue, avec que/ques taches
obfcures: les jambes et les pattes font d'un
couleur de chair olivaitre.
La F melle eJI repre/entee par la fgure
d'embas: le bec, les yeux, les jamnbes et les
pieds s'accordent exaciement en Jorme et en
couzleur avec ceux di MaUe/: la tete, le coz4,
et le corps, tant dejus que df us, fint d'zun
vert   aundtre,   tommie   an  PinJon   JVert
(Gh~ozis); Ic croupion  ,17 d'un jaune p/us
bril/ant, tirant fur i'orange. les cote's de la
tete, et la gorge, font ccu/cur de cendre: la
partie iijferieure dui ventre, et les plumes de
couverture du dy us de la queue, font d'Un
