outer cover of the infect; the head, legs,
and end of the tail, being taken off and
the inward parts taken out; which Ihells,
hardened and dried for this purpofe, were
found hanging about the necks of the na-
tives of Africa, on the coaft over-againif
Madagafcar. The figures of them are
fhewn in my Hiflory of Birds, &c. plate
178. I do not know what tribe or ge-
nus of infeds to clafs this laft with: I be-
lieve it hath not till now been figured or
defcribed.

lypes,  the Limax     Marina, the
Hairy Crab, and the Herring-
bone Coralline.

lypes adhering to it, all of their natural
fize: B reprefents the bafis of the Balanus,
which is a little concave: C (hews the
head of one of the Polypes divided, to dif-
cover the inner part of it.
The (hell of the Balanus is fexangular,
having a kind of buttreffes on the angles:
each buttrefs is compofed of four tubes
joined together, narrow and partly open
at their tops, but increafing in breadth to-
wards their bottoms, fo as to join each
other: each tube is encompaffed by a great

turelle.  La Xgure B reprtiente la bafe du
Balanus, qui ell un pea concave. C mnontre

en de'couvrir l'inte'rieur.
L'ecaiille du Balanus efl hexagone, ayant
aux angles une epe'ce de defenfes : chaque de-
fenfe eJI compofje de quatre tuyaux joints en-
femble, etroits et un peu ouverts par le haut,
mais allant en gro/fant vers le bas, de forte
qu'iWs s'y entretouchent: chaque tuyau e en-
zoure d'un grand nombre de petits anneaux
