This Francolin of mine is alfo a native of Bengal, in the Eaft Indies; for it is very exaftly figured in a parcel of drawings after nature, done in that country, at the requeft of the late Dr. Mead, and fent to him in London, about twenty years before his death, by a friend of the Dodor in India. Tournefort's print is the only figure publilhed of this bird that I know of; but that has no defeription with it: fo that this of mine may be ac- counted the firft hiftory of the Francolin. I take it to be a cock b.ed. The bill is black: the fore part of the head, the breaft, fides, and infides of the wings, are of a blueifh afh colour: the belly, thighs, and covert-feathers beneath the tail, are of a dark reddifh orange co- lour: the tail feathers, which are hid by its coverts, are of the fame orange colour: it hath a line of dufky white along the middle of the belly: the fides of the breaft are fpotted with black: the throat under the bill hath a black fpot furrounded with white, and without that a black line from each corner of the mouth; which lines P L A. 247.
