   DEPUTY DIRECTOR
August 26, 1939
Mr. F. N. Hamerstrom Jr.
Game Management Division
424 University Farm Place
Madison, Wisconsin
Dear Hamerstrom:
I hope that my delay in acknowledging your l etter of August 4
has not inconvenienced you.
The discrepancy in the number of sharptails banded is due to
the fact that I did not figure in the four birds that died before they
were liberated. In other words, we have banded 92 but 4 of those died
before they were released. No additional bandings have been made since
that report.
This summer we continued the nest hunting census work by the
use of C.C.C. crews through the middle of July. However, we found that
the boys were contacting only two or three broods on the average and did
not feel that we were getting enough information to justify the expendi-
ture of time. We are continuing the horse-back census work throughout
the summer and plan to carry it on at least until the deer season which
started the middle of November.- I have the impression that our popula-
tions in Michigan are probably still too low to justify intensive re-
search on nests and broods. Perhaps when the cycle is at the peak, such
studies will prove more fruitful.
We are glad to learn that you are writing a paper on the re-
cent prairie chickenm and sharptail work in central Wisconsin. We would
be anxious to see a carbon copy if any are available.
Sincerely yours,
H. D. Ruhl, In Charge
