1628 - 1631     Pive Jesuit miesionaries arrived in CVI
and two went on to the -ainland, but if
either visited Sierra Lamen before all died
or returned to Portupl, there is no record
Of it. .
1639  1648      Jesuit doouments stating in 1639 why the order
cannot extend its activitiea end in 1648 why
it cannot resume its CVI mission include
passing references to Sie== Leone (Brfi63o 5,
pp. 334, 542).
1647 - 1650     Spanish Capuchins claim Sierra Leoam  as
a mission field, and in 1650 report that
Imany churches which were in ruins have been
re-built'(Bxsid 5, p. 581).   Probably the
Cepuchinv were attracted to Sierra Leone by
Jesuit publications - oertainly the churchee
they found in ruins had boan built by the Jesuit
