There are several hundred changes of substance - additions or corrections
- from the
original edition of 1987, even if many of these are small, for example the
insertion of a
more accurate date or the noting of an additional edition, or a change in
- or the addition of
a variant in - the spelling of a name. However there are, I believe, sixty-five
totally new
entries plus another seventy-five entries which have been substantially revised.
addition an effort has been made to provide more information on the authors
of the
sources, especially if they are otherwise little known. The opportunity has
also been taken
to improve the presentation of entries and of the wording of my comments.
It has now become possible to print the accents and diacriticals which -
for technical
reasons - had to be omitted in the first edition from the printing of non-English
names in
upper case letters. If perchance some of these have not made their way back
into the
entries, it is to be hoped that they will be found in the indexes.
I remain especially grateful to P.E.H.Hair, Adam Jones, and Robin Law for
the way in
which they have continued to draw errors or new material to my attention.
A full list of
acknowledgments is to be found on p. xx, and to the 1987 list have now been
added the
names of Stanley B. Alpers and Paul Wilson, energetic and meticulous workers
in the field
of West African bibliography, to whom I have become greatly indebted since
the first
appearance of this Guide. I am, of course, still responsible for all remaining
