William H. Upham, standing on the right, was a colorful figure of Racine's early history. He was among the first volunteers of the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry of the Iron Brigade during the Civil War. He was reported killed in action at the first battle of Bull Run, but had only been taken prisoner by the Confederate soldiers. He escaped from prison in 1865 and lived to become a prominent lumber dealer and later Governor of Wisconsin.
